Here’s Danielle with today’s Democracy-ish write-up!
There comes a moment in every political alignment when the polite fiction collapses, the stage lights dim, and the actors finally show you who they have been all along. For years, progressive commentators and political analysts have warned that the Democratic establishment’s obsession with “bipatisanship” and moderation was a deliberate, ideological strategy to protect corporate donors, maintain the status quo, and silence systemic critiques.
That warning was laid bare as the political establishment dropped all pretenses. Representatives of the moderate consensus—long hailed as “vetted,” safe options—showed their true colors by siding with far-right figures and abandoning their party’s base. The sight of Representative Haley Stevens sitting alongside far-right Republican candidate Mike Rogers in a Black church in Michigan, laughing, smiling, and effectively endorsing his candidacy over Rhodes Scholar and progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, was not just a bizarre news cycle. It was an emblem of how white supremacy, corporate interest, and establishment protectionism operate when threatened by actual democratic power.

THE ESTABLISHMENT PLAYBOOK
+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
1. Elevate "Safe" Moderates --> Funded by PACs & Corporate Donors
2. Punch Left --> Vilify Grassroots & Progressive Reformers
3. Unmask Under Pressure --> Endorse Far-Right over Progressive Change

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously warned in his Letter from Birmingham Jail, the greatest stumbling block to justice is often not the outright reactionary, but the white moderate who prefers a negative peace—which is the absence of tension—to a positive peace, which is the presence of justice.
The moderate establishment consistently demands compromise on the backs of marginalized communities. We are told that “vote blue no matter who” is a sacred rule—until the candidate who wins the primary is Black, Brown, Muslim, or unapologetically progressive. When candidates like Abdul El-Sayed, Zohran Mamdani, or Representative Ilhan Omar build multi-racial, working-class coalitions without taking Super PAC or corporate money, the establishment’s commitment to party loyalty suddenly vanishes.
The political establishment would rather lose a seat to a far-right Republican who preserves the tax structures and donor privileges of the wealthy elite than win with a progressive socialist who threatens the broligarchy. As veteran strategist James Carville once candidly expressed, the establishment would rather lose control of a legislative house than see progressive democratic socialists gain leverage.
When moderate figures like Haley Stevens, John Fetterman, Kirsten Sinema, or Joe Manchin are elevated by leadership—including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Representative Jim Clyburn, and party apparatuses—we are repeatedly assured that they have been “vetted.”
Yet, time and again, these “vetted” figures turn around to vote against essential healthcare reform, protect billionaire tax loopholes, expand militarism, or directly back far-right political agendas.
Establishment Definition of "Vetted":
[✓] Accepts Corporate PAC Money
[✓] Maintains Donor Consensus
[✓] Punches Left on Demand
[✗] Accountable to Working-Class Base
When Donald Trump publicly praised Haley Stevens for her “bravery” in turning her back on her party’s progressive nominee, it completed a bizarre political cycle: a former senate candidate who voted to impeach Trump twice being celebrated by him for aligning with his chosen Senate candidate. It serves as a stark reminder that the establishment “big tent” only ever opens rightward—never leftward.
If the establishment expected their unmasking to demoralize grassroots voters, they severely miscalculated. Overreach breeds clarity.
In the immediate 24 hours following Stevens’ high-profile endorsement of Mike Rogers, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed raised over $1.2 million—his single highest fundraising day since winning the primary. The political establishment’s attempt to sabotage progressive momentum triggered a classic Streisand Effect: instead of suppressing support, it illuminated the stark choice facing the electorate.
People are exhausted by a political culture that treats human rights, universal healthcare, and working-class economic relief as negotiable, while treating corporate subsidies and foreign warfare as sacred obligations.
“When you become too powerful, you become arrogant and sloppy. A generation that saw the realities of inequality and conflict on their phones isn’t buying the establishment narrative anymore.”
As voters head to the polls across key states—from Michigan and Texas to Maine, Ohio, and Iowa—the narrative of an invincible political machine is unraveling. High turnout among young voters, Black voters, Latino voters, and working-class communities signals that the electorate is increasingly looking past corporate-backed endorsements.
The outcome of this political moment will not be decided in backroom donor dinners or Sunday morning talk shows. It will be decided by whether the public continues to accept the compromises made on their backs, or whether they demand a democracy that truly serves the people.
