A quick public service announcement first: I will be joined live ▶at 3 pm UK time on YouTube today by the brilliant Samara Gill to discuss her excellent Substack piece lamenting the extraordinary way the Sussexes are now putting their children at the center of their security battle with the British state, very deliberately saying they have had to take them out of school for security reasons. As points out, they could quite easily have said nothing and moved the children to another school, or they could have said they were moving for personal reasons. But no. It had to be security. It is, in my opinion, pretty low that these children (who have no say in whether they are used as pawns in this battle) are now … being used as pawns in this battle. No doubt we will also get onto the new Instagram photo dump Meghan released this morning to celebrate Harry’s 42nd birthday. Once again, the children are front and center of the happy-family narrative being spun. We see them again with their backs turned, a ❤️ blocking their faces, doing very wholesome things: out walking, driving quads through the English countryside, painting, wearing silly hats.
The Sussex defense of all this is to say, well, they are just a normal family doing normal things, and normal families post stuff on Instagram, the fact that they can’t do it without triggering a media pile-on and speculation about where the photographs were taken (with people geo-mapping the locations) illustrates, they say … why they need security!
