Yesterday, compiled a newsletter on the upcoming changes to Affordable Care Act insurance exchanges as a result of last year’s Big Ugly Bill. If you or someone you know relies on the ACA for health insurance, it is a sobering must-read.
His newsletter gives me a chance to close a loop I left dangling. In my coverage of White Christian Nationalist Biblical Medical Ethics, I reviewed many of their greatest hits. Readers who missed that series can catch up below.
Readers often ask me *how can White Christian Nationalists be so uncaring? Jesus healed the sick. He didn’t charge them astronomical fees or demand co-pays and out-of-pocket deductibles for the privilege. *
From The Christian Worldview of Medicine:
- Economics
We affirm that the cost of health and medical care should be
borne primarily by the familywith supplementation byprivate voluntary insurance,contributions, andthe Churchaccording to Biblical design (II Thessalonians 3:10-14; I Timothy 5:8).
We deny that medical care should be provided by civil governmentexcept for disease, disabilities, and injuries directly caused by governmental service (Romans 13:1-5).
White Christian Nationalists also explicitly state that access to healthcare is not a human right:

We affirm that health and medical care should be available to all people within the capacities of a free market to provide them and the consumer to pay for them (Matthew 25:32-46; Luke 4:18, 19).
We deny that such care is an unlimited rightthat may be promoted to the detriment of other social responsibilities (Matthew 4:4; I Timothy 4:8; II Thessalonians 3:10).
Imagine you’ve been diagnosed with a rare disease that impacts your organs. There’s no cure, and the extremely toxic chemotherapy regime you must take costs almost $70,000.
Your insurance pays for the bulk of the prescription, but the treatment is debilitating. You’re self-employed and you cannot do your work. Your brain fogs to the point that you can’t remember words or form coherent sentences. You cannot keep track of your own travel calendar, which is a disaster because you travel and speak to groups as part of your living.
You forget how to write; you cannot explain what is happening to you, though you use a torrent of words to try; you become suicidal when you’ve never been depressed previously.
Since you cannot work, you cannot launch your current project. You can’t promote it. You can’t travel, and when you attempt it, you’re a disaster to everyone you meet. Your brain is too scrambled to even contemplate a GoFundMe, let alone manage it.
So you fall into an abyss of debt.
Two rounds of chemotherapy later, you are drowning. So you turn to your extended family. You know, some of the people the White Christian Nationalists above say are supposed to support you when you’re ill. You ask them for help.
You hear it’s your fault you’re sick, because you’re away from the Lord.
And God’s trying to get your attention, and maybe you need to endure this trial to listen and come back to him.
And all we can do in this situation is pray, because it’s your fault you’re in this mess. Maybe if you turn your life around enough, God will lift you out of it.
You set up a GoFundMe to fund your astronomical private insurance and medical expenses, but plenty of these unfeeling monsters lurk there, too. No matter how much you beg and plead and reveal the private, humiliating details of your illness, you cannot raise enough money to cover your costs.
You go to your local church, because they advertise their own self-funded insurance program, but they demand that you sit with a pastor and endure an invasive interview before telling you that sadly your own sinful choices led you into illness. While they cannot subsidize your sin by helping with medical costs, they’d love to see you join the church in order to heal your spiritual sickness.
I don’t know what a Democratic Congress might do with this healthcare time bomb, but we know what happens if Democrats don’t take Congress: The One Ugly Bill provisions go into effect, and millions of Americans will lose their health coverage.
