My old law school professor, Carlton Larson, taught me Constitutional Law. As a law nerd and defender of human rights, he can’t stand how the conservative majority on the Supreme Court treats this foundational document as their personal Play-Doh to manipulate to achieve their regressive ends.
In his recent book, * One Nation Under Law: The Meaning of the Declaration of Independence,* he explains what the founders actually intended and what they wrote. They did not want to create a President with king-like powers above reproach, able to escape accountability and amass billions in profit for himself and his corrupt family. They also didn’t advocate for the Church to be the State and the establishment of Christianity as the dominant religion in what was supposed to be a secular country with religious freedoms.
If you reflect on the recent Supreme Court decisions, they were either terrible law students or they just don’t care about the Constitution and the rule of law and abuse their power to promote their right-wing agenda.
Larson joined me recently to discuss his book and how the conservative majority of the Supreme Court is betraying the founders, their intent, and the Constitution.
