Without the Supreme Court, we get nothing.
A majority of Americans and our desire for progress and democracy remain hijacked by six extremist judges groomed by right-wing billionaires.
They have lifetime tenure and no enforceable guardrails on their power.
All the work that was done in the 50s and 60s for women’s rights, civil rights, and equality remains at peril as long as these Christian nationalists retain their near-unlimited power.
For example, just look at the tattered remains of the Voting Rights Act, which was the crown jewel of the Civil Rights movement. Justice Roberts’ lifelong obsession to gut it came to fruition with Shelby in 2013, and the dagger was delivered in this year’s Callais decision. The conservatives on the Court don’t even care to be intellectually consistent anymore. They’ll abandon their previous opinions to justify achieving their desired end goal, which is a return to an America dominated by white, Christian males who vote MAGA.
As a result of the devastating Shelby and Callais decisions, a wave of racially discriminatory voting policies has been unleashed across America to undermine Black, Democratic voters and promote minority rule.
In his new book, * An American Problem: How the Country Built—and the Supreme Court Broke—the Voting Rights Act, *Brennan Center Senior Research Fellow Kevin T. Morris offers a sweeping history of the Voting Rights Act, its dismantling at the hands of Justice Roberts, and the disastrous consequences that await our beleaguered democracy.
