Here’s Danielle with today’s write-up of Democracy-Ish!
We have spent years analyzing the architecture of modern fascism as if it were purely ideological. We talk about the rhetoric of strongmen, the weaponization of grievance, and the slow, deliberate erosion of democratic norms. But we rarely talk about the physical infrastructure that keeps the nightmare running on loop.
We forget that the modern authoritarian regime does not rely solely on brownshirts or state-controlled television; it relies on server racks, fiber-optic cables, and cooling fans. It relies on the industrial-scale manufacturing of synthetic reality.
When news broke that Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) raided the Washington, D.C., home of Representative Ilhan Omar, the immediate, collective reaction from anyone paying attention was a weary sigh of recognition. It was a classic authoritarian maneuver: performative, retaliatory, and targeted directly at a high-profile Muslim woman to feed a ravenous base. It was a desperate attempt to dominate the news cycle, distract from the non-compliance surrounding the release of the Epstein files, and manufacture a pre-midterm panic.
It is the political playbook of a regime that has nothing real to offer—no economic relief, no climate strategy, no coherent policy—other than targeted cruelty and endless spectacle.
Yet, while the state apparatus in Washington was busy turning the federal justice system into a weapon of political intimidation, something extraordinary happened thousands of miles away that exposed the absolute fragility of this entire performance.
Ukraine launched targeted strikes against major Russian data centers, including key facilities hosting Yandex and regional infrastructure.
Almost instantly, the digital landscape transformed.
Within hours of those servers going dark, cloud monitoring data showed Russian bot traffic plummeting worldwide. In Germany, online engagement for the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) collapsed overnight. On social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Threads, the toxic, relentless tide of coordinated harassment suddenly receded. Users running real-time “bot tests”—posting basic, uncontroversial human statements about human rights or dignity—were met not with the usual instantaneous barrage of automated venom, but with silence.
For the first time in nearly a decade, the internet felt... human.
The implications of this moment are profound. For years, we have been told that society is deeply, irreconcilably divided—that half the world has suddenly descended into unhinged, violent extremism. But Ukraine’s precision strike revealed a quiet, radical truth: a massive portion of the rage, the division, and the apparent momentum of global white supremacy and authoritarianism is an engineered illusion. It is a digital projection created in high-voltage server farms, subsidized by broligarchs, and deployed to shatter social cohesion.
Authoritarianism requires a false consensus to survive. It needs you to believe that everyone around you has lost their mind, that resistance is futile, and that the cruelty you see on your feed reflects the true heart of your neighbors. But when you cut the power to the bot farms, the illusion shatters.
What is MAGA, or the AfD, or any modern far-right movement without its synthetic megaphones? What happens to the “culture war” when the automated outrage machines stop feeding the algorithm?
It turns out that modern fascism is far weaker than it looks—and far more dependent on technology than it cares to admit. The raid on Ilhan Omar’s home was an act of political theater designed to project absolute power. But the sudden silence on social media after a few server racks went dark proved where the real power lies.
We are not just fighting a war of ideas or an election between competing parties. We are fighting an industrial complex of automated disinformation designed to keep us terrified, isolated, and docile. The digital ghosts that haunt our democracy have physical addresses, power grids, and IP ranges. And as it turns out, when you turn off the machines, the truth has a funny way of filling the room.
