How do you shame shameless people?
How do you engage them in good-faith conversation when they offer nothing but bad faith and lies? What’s the shared common good when all they care about is power and crushing the opposition? How do we create an egalitarian, democratic society when one of the two major political parties is stacked with lying sociopaths who don’t care about the truth, facts, rule of law, or ethics?
Well, this in part explains how we have Donald Trump as President, who was aided by Putin, disinformation, and millions from right-wing billionaires. Thanks to Musk’s Twitter and Fox News, there’s a 24-7 diet of conspiracy theories, hate, and fearmongering that confuses and radicalizes a giant chunk of the American population. Even though MAGA is a minority, they control most of the media institutions and thus the narrative.
What happens when the bot farm turns off?
We’re seeing it over the past day on Twitter after Ukraine bombed three Russian data centers. The usual accounts have mysteriously logged off, and the Twitter swamp is shockingly less shitty. MAGA couldn’t even properly deploy its James Talarico “bombshell.” Their giant lie blew up in their face. However, they still control TikTok, Twitter, Fox News, most of talk radio, many influential podcasts, UFC, CBS News, Newsmax, and now CNN and Warner Bros.
It’s going to get worse, especially with AI’s ability to produce deepfakes. How does a country survive an onslaught of lies, deception, and fake news?
