New research suggests people with IBS may have a significantly higher risk of developing diverticulitis, a painful inflammation of small pockets in the colon wall.
A recent study of more than 25,000 people found that those with IBS had nearly four times the rate of acute diverticulitis compared with people without IBS.
IBS was also linked to a higher risk of repeat diverticulitis attacks.
This is not great news.
IBS and diverticulitis share symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. But diverticulitis involves actual inflammation, can cause serious complications, and needs medical treatment.
So if you have a history of IBS, any new, severe, or unusual abdominal pain should not automatically be blamed on IBS.
