A new retrospective cohort study in Cureus found a strong two-way connection between IBS and anxiety.
People with anxiety were more likely to later develop IBS****People with IBS were more than twice as likely to later develop anxiety
In other words, each condition seems to increase the risk of the other.
Interestingly, this pattern was not seen with inflammatory bowel diseases, suggesting the connection is specific to IBS.
This is yet more evidence of the gut–brain axis, where digestive health and mental health directly influence each other.
For IBS, treating the gut symptoms and anxiety together may lead to better results.
