New research suggests inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may be detectable in blood up to 10 years before diagnosis.
Scientists analyzed 2,000 blood samples from 500 people, including patients who later developed Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
They found distinct changes in antibodies, the immune system proteins that recognize bacteria, viruses, and other substances.
People who later developed IBD had less antibody diversity and different immune responses than healthy people. Those who developed more complicated Crohn’s disease also showed distinct antibody patterns years before diagnosis.
**Why does this matter for IBS? **IBS and IBD can share symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, but they are very different conditions. Earlier detection of IBD could help distinguish inflammatory disease from IBS sooner.
**The takeaway? **IBD may begin developing silently many years before symptoms and diagnosis. These findings could eventually lead to blood tests that detect disease earlier, predict complications, and help guide treatment.
