A new large, long term study by Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University of 650,000+ IBS patients over 20 years looked at the long-term safety of common IBS medications.
There’s some bad news.
Some commonly used treatments were linked to a higher risk of death over time.
Antidepressants were linked to a 35% higher risk of death.
The anti-diarrheal drugs loperamide and diphenoxylate were linked to roughly double the risk of death.
Some good news:
Other IBS medications, including the common antispasmodics, were not linked to any increased risk.
There is some important context:
The overall risk for any individual is still small
The study shows an
association, not proof that these drugs directly cause harmIncreased risk may be related to complications like heart issues, falls, or stroke
The study concluded that long-term use of some IBS medications may carry real risks, so treatments should be individualized and regularly reviewed with your doctor.
Don’t just rely on a medication indefinitely.

You are not alone.
