Phages, or bacteria-killing viruses, might help with the gut microbiota imbalances found in IBS.
At least one study has already found that the oral use of ** phage therapy to treat IBS** could control a strain of the bacterium
What’s amazing here is that each type of phage virus specifically combats a certain type of bacteria. Once selected, the phages *only attack *the population of bacteria that is generating the imbalance.
This minimizes the damage to the surrounding microbiota.
This differs from antibiotic treatments, which kill harmful bacteria but also wreak havoc on the good bacteria that do no harm and are necessary.
Also amazing - once the phage enters the bacteria and attacks it, the phage reproduces until the bacteria explodes. This releases new phages that continue the bacteria killing spree. (Sounds like a great horror movie plot to me!)
You are not alone.
