Researchers have uncovered a hidden molecular warning sign of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can linger - even when patients feel well and appear to be in remission.
By studying around 900 human gut biopsies, researchers found that intestinal cells in IBD patients can remain unusually vulnerable to damage and primed to die.
This creates a smoldering molecular defect in the gut lining.
That matters a lot because your gut lining is supposed to protect you. If those cells remain vulnerable to an early death, future inflammation and relapse may be more likely.
This means that IBD can remain biologically active below the surface, even when someone feels perfectly fine.
