A huge new review found a surprising connection between ADHD and gut symptoms, including IBS, constipation, indigestion, and loss of bowel control.
Researchers looked at data from more than 1.9 million people across 23 studies. They found that people with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) had:
almost
twice the odds of constipationa
58% increase in IBSmore than
four times the odds of encopresis, or loss of bowel control
This just adds to the growing mountain of evidence that the gut and brain are deeply connected.
ADHD can affect eating patterns, daily routines, impulsivity, stress, and sleep. All of these affect digestion. Plus some ADHD medications cause gut side effects, including constipation.
And earlier research has already linked ADHD with changes in gut bacteria.
My takeaway? IBS is never just about the gut. And ADHD is not always just about the brain.
And more about the brain-gut connection…
You are not alone.
