New research suggests antibiotic use during childhood and adolescence may increase the risk of developing IBS.
Swedish researchers followed 2,853 people and found that those who received antibiotics had 50% higher odds of IBS by age 24 than those who did not.
More antibiotic prescriptions equaled more risk. People with six or more prescriptions had 70% higher odds of IBS.
Antibiotics can disrupt the gut microbiome, which may help explain the connection.
The study does not prove antibiotics cause IBS, but it adds to growing concerns about their long-term effects on gut health.
