7 warmer than pre-industrial levels, if not hotter.
Even though 2024 was officially the hottest year on earth in the last 100,000 years, 2026 is currently on track to break that at an alarming 1.6* Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and thanks to extreme climate-driven events like this ol super El Niño in the pacific, 2027 is guaranteed to be even hotter, with current predictions coming in at 1.7* warmer than pre-industrial levels, if not hotter.
All to say, that puts us right on track to permanently break the 1.5* threshold established by the Paris Agreement over 10 years ago, and seeing that the trillionaire class seems hell bent on continuing this resource-extraction and fossil fuel dependent capitalist experiment that is the undeniable cause of anthropogenic climate change in the first place, I’m sure that we can only look forward to the years beyond that being even greater record breakers.
Of course, if we weren’t all so distracted, we could actually work together to rise up and create meaningful change through the dismantling of those fundamentally racist, patriarchal colonial capitalist systems and the corrupt government systems that support and uphold them…which sounds kind of nice, huh?
As easy as it may be to tune out the world, maybe it’s time we unplugged from these destructive capitalist systems to actually create the change we need before it’s too late. There is no right or wrong way to take action and get involved, whether it be working within those systems or outside of them to break them down, because at the end of the day, the change we need isn’t going to come from a few people doing things perfectly, it’s going to come from all of us doing everything we can even in imperfect ways, working to stop the source of this breakdown at its roots, while restoring, uplifting and creating resilient ecosystems and communities ready to flourish and thrive in the world that comes next.
