My mentor recently wrote this about the current political environment:
While many have long predicted that Democrats will enjoy a “blue wave” election, I think of it more as a “red undertow,” which will pull many Republicans under and significantly trim the margins for many others.
A blue wave implies an endorsement or affirmation of Democrats and their policies. But Democrats’ brand is still in tatters from 2021-2025, particularly 2021 and 2022, when they not only had President Biden in the White House but also majorities in the Senate and House. Fortunately for Democrats, this election will in most cases not be about them.
That is EXACTLY right.
The story of this election is not a surge of enthusiasm for Democrats but rather a revulsion toward Republicans — even among some Republicans.
Here’s the only thing I think Charlie may have missed: It’s shaping up to not just be a red undertow but maybe a Republican rip tide.
As in, a whole lot of Republican seats and states may get dragged out to sea by the powerful forces at work in the electorate right now.
Witness the decision by the main Republican Senate super PAC — the Senate Leadership Fund — to start spending money in South Carolina!
and I talked about the Republican rip tide in this week’s edition of our “Super Tuesdays” pod. We also broke down the state of the Senate majority fight, Ted Cruz vs JD Vance and why Brazil’s election results makes a Donald Trump Jr. candidacy more likely in 2028.
