Earlier today, Jared and I put on our Humanities hats and engaged in a creative exercise.
Using Back to the Future as an exquisite pop-cultural reference, we imagined what would happen if Americans elected officials beholden to corporate money. Let’s say a great white knight, Gavin Newsom, or a center-left derivative emerges as the Democratic candidate for 2028 and wins the election. What will happen? Everything will become better, and fascism will be eradicated overnight, right?
Vote Blue No Matter Who is the mantra that will save our democracy that is under direct assault from Trump, MAGA, and the oligarchs. Except that solution hasn’t worked. 2020 was merely a pause in the ascent of a far-right movement that continues to drink our milkshake.
But Democrats are different! Indeed, they are. They wouldn’t unleash ICE to terrorize suburban schools, kill USAID, gut the CDC, or appoint the most incompetent, inexperienced freaks to lead important agencies.
However, if you follow the money, they are fed and paid by the very same technofascists and leaders of companies who were present at Trump and Xi’s dinner last night. Gavin Newsom and California Democrats stabbed the state in the back by allowing the Ellisons to continue with their disastrous Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. Democrats are telling candidates not to hit AI too hard even though it’s an 80-20 issue. Democratic leaders continue taking money from AIPAC, and the Congressional Black Caucus kept money from the surveillance company Palantir.
So, what will America look like under a corporate Democrat? What will happen in 2032?
We imagine the dystopia with receipts.
