Most of us have been taught, in one way or another, that peace is something we arrive at – a destination reached after effort, after resolution, after the noise settles.
But what if peace is not something we arrive at, but something we already are?
There are two kinds of peace. The first depends on circumstances – the peace we feel when things go well, when our needs are met, when the world cooperates with our preferences. This peace comes and goes. It is, by nature, fragile.
The second is the peace that is our nature. It has nothing to do with what is or is not taking place in experience. It is always present, under all circumstances – simply overlooked in favour of the more colourful, demanding content of our lives.
This guided meditation is a direct exploration of that second peace – not as a concept, but as a living encounter with what is already present. Beginning with a question that runs through all of human life – is there something within us that is not subject to the turbulence of events? – Rupert guides a sustained and gentle enquiry into the nature of awareness itself: the awareness in which all experiences, pleasant or unpleasant, appear, and with which they are known.
The meditation also explores what naturally flows from this recognition: not a withdrawal from the world, but a different way of meeting it. The understanding that our being is shared – with everyone and everything, without exception – does not diminish our responsibility towards others. On the contrary, it is the only foundation from which genuine care can arise. What is dangerous is not this recognition, but its absence: the unquestioned belief that our senses give us an accurate view of reality, a view that presents a world of separate selves and makes conflict inevitable. This understanding does not deny the world. It upgrades it – from the paradigm of separation to the recognition of our shared being, which is the only lasting ground for peace.
What is discovered is not a technique for managing experience, nor a retreat from it. It is the recognition of a presence that underlies all experience – already whole, already complete, and already at peace.

About Rupert Spira
Rupert Spira has spent several decades exploring the nature of reality and the source of lasting peace – through study, practice, and the distillation of understanding from many of the world’s great contemplative traditions. Through writings, conversations and retreats, his work consistently points toward a single recognition: that the imperturbable peace and joy we are looking for is already present as the very nature of our being, which we share with everyone and everything without exception.
