I’m here on behalf of @protectourwinterscanada and @naturecanada_ as part of Nature on the Hill, along with dozens of ENGOs, speaking up for the natural world we rely on to live when it comes to other big decisions being made these days.
In particular, we’re working to make amendments to Bill C39, the Build Canada Strong Act, so that it doesn’t throw out protections for the ecological integrity of the lands and waters that our communities and economies rely on when looking at fast tracking ‘projects of national interest.’
It may seem like common sense, but the odds are stacked against us - the oil and gas industry has a full time fleet of lobbyists who are very well paid to represent their vision and further the end of the world, whereas myself and many of us here this week are all volunteering our time and energy to speak up for a livable future, and since carney has been in office, the meetings he’s taken with oil and gas representatives out number those he’s taken with environmental groups 35 to 1.
It’s no wonder that the ‘projects of national interest’ we often hear about are things like pipelines that overwhelmingly benefit multinational giant corporations, rather than clean energy infrastructure that would empower and support local, rural and indigenous communities.
In this time of change, policymakers don’t need to hear the voices of people paid to promote a message, they need to hear from real people about real issues, and if we didn’t have power to make change, then these industries wouldn’t spend millions of dollars a year lobbying to try and suppress our voices.
Together we have the ability to create positive change, all we need to do is show up! So take that opportunity to lobby, send that email, write that letter and make that call to make your voice heard, because better futures are possible. Let’s make em happen!
