Early September Intense Heat & Humidity
Some of the highest September temperatures since the early 1940s occurred in the state & in our area in early September.
Heat indices were not quite as high as the big July heat, but still peaked at 99-113.
State-wide, highs topped 86-102 with many observation sites over southwestern Indiana reaching 100. Heat indices reached 94-115 across the state on September 1.
A gravity wave from collapsed severe MCS in Iowa moved over area on September 1, but only produced puffy altocumulus castellanus clouds & no rainfall.
September 2 highs ranged from 91-97 over the forecast area with heat indices 99-115. State-wide highs ranged from 90-101 with heat indices peaking at 99-117.
Highs September 3 reached 91-97 over the forecast area with heat indices peaking at 98-116. State-wide highs topped out at 90-101 with heat indices 98-118.
Microbursts September 5-6
Three microbursts occurred Friday, September 5 & Saturday, September 6 as a few scattered storms struggled through the strong cap in the explosive +4000 J/kg ML CAPE.
Trees were downed northeast of Monon & north of Buffalo Friday.
Corn was downed, flattened near Windfall with pea hail Saturday.
Numerous large trees & powerlines were downed in Crawfordsville area Saturday.
