I was at the Copenhagen Security Summit yesterday. It was a very good event indeed, although the atmosphere was quite somber.
You all know that I’ve been warning about the Trump administration’s intentions for months. From that perspective the US NatSec Strategy that was published on Friday has made my job much easier. Now it’s out in broad daylight. It’s a strategy that aligns with the Kremlin and a blueprint for subversive influence against democracies. It’s the document where the US formally abdicates its role as the beacon and protector of democracy worldwide. Dictators and autocrats rejoice!
Former Secretary of State Pompeo was at the Security Summit yesterday and tried to belittle the consequences of Trump’s ways and the NSS. He holds many valid viewpoints, but is still a Trump apologist. He joked with the audience that his son had said “you’ve been around Trump too long”. His son is so right, but apparently it hasn’t dawned on Pompeo himself yet!

The bottom line is we as Europeans need to wake up and stand shoulder to shoulder. What we should learn from the Trump NatSec Strategy is that we are in urgent need of a European Security Strategy ourselves. We’re not even able to make one. Until we are, we’ll be played around by the bullies like Trump, Putin and Xi. It’s as simple as that!
