LUTHMANN NOTE: I refuse to treat Lepanto as a dusty painting while Europe forgets the faith that gave the victory its meaning. Those Christians had rivalries, grievances, and reasons to stay divided. They sailed together anyway. They prayed, fought, and accepted obligations larger than themselves. Today’s Christians should examine what we’re willing to do with the inheritance they helped preserve. Complaining about decline is easy. Raising children in the faith, supporting a parish, defending the persecuted, and living with courage require commitment. Europe needs Our Lady of Victory. It also needs Christians willing to get off the sidelines and live what they profess. This piece is “October 7 Remembered.”
The cameras will remember one October 7. Christians had better remember another. Today marks three years since the Hamas-led terrorist assault on Israel, when gunmen murdered civilians and dragged hostages into Gaza, setting off a devastating war. The anniversary is already receiving international coverage, and the victims deserve remembrance without excuses for their killers.
But history did not begin in 2023. Long before television producers assembled their anniversary packages, October 7 belonged to a Christian victory whose meaning reaches directly into Europe’s present crisis. For the survival of Christian Europe and the spiritual conviction required to defend it, I would argue that the most important October 7, by far, remains October 7, 1571. Lepanto.
That was the day the Holy League confronted the Ottoman fleet off western Greece and delivered a crushing defeat. It was also the day that became inseparable from a Catholic conviction: the Blessed Virgin Mary had heard the prayers of the faithful and interceded for the Christian forces. Our Lady of Victory. The name carries gratitude, reverence, and an understanding of dependence that modern political language struggles to accommodate. The men who fought could wield weapons and command ships. They could prepare, maneuver, and endure. They also believed they needed help from Heaven. Today, 455 years later, Europe needs that humility and the courage that accompanied it.
Pope Pius V helped assemble the Holy League from Catholic powers whose rivalries made cooperation difficult. Spain, Venice, the Papal States, and other participants brought their strength to a fleet commanded by Don Juan of Austria. The Ottoman invasion of Venetian-held Cyprus supplied the immediate crisis. Beyond it stood the larger contest for the Mediterranean, its territory, trade, and strategic approaches. These states had competing ambitions, and commanders had reasons to distrust one another. Their unity had to survive the weight of those differences before it could survive an enemy attack. They managed it. When the confrontation came, they possessed something more useful than unanimous agreement on every grievance: a common purpose strong enough to bring them into battle together.
There is a rebuke there for Christians who have perfected the art of fighting one another while neglecting everything they are supposed to defend. The Holy League’s members had major disputes over money, territory, and power. Yet they recognized that those disputes could not be allowed to decide the outcome before the fighting even began. Don Juan had to turn an alliance into a force capable of acting. Catholic accounts describe clergy accompanying the expedition and Rosaries distributed among its men. Their faith traveled aboard the ships. It belonged to the undertaking, to the danger ahead, and to their understanding of what they owed one another.
Across the distance separating Rome from the fleet, Pius V called Christians to pray the Rosary for victory. The faithful sought the Blessed Mother’s intercession while the soldiers and sailors prepared to confront the Ottoman force. In Catholic belief, Mary heard those prayers and obtained divine assistance from her Son, helping guide the Christian forces to victory over their Muslim Ottoman adversaries. Thanksgiving followed. Pius V established the commemorative feast in 1572; his successor, Gregory XIII, renamed it Our Lady of the Rosary. That is why October 7 occupies its place in the Church’s calendar. The feast preserves a relationship between prayer, sacrifice, and gratitude that Catholics have carried across centuries.
The battle was brutal. Hundreds of warships converged in an engagement fought largely by oared vessels, with cannon fire and boarding combat turning crowded decks into killing grounds. The Holy League devastated the Ottoman fleet. It demonstrated, at enormous human cost, that the power confronting Christian Europe could be defeated. Historical honesty also requires remembering that the Ottomans rebuilt their navy, retained Cyprus, and remained formidable. Lepanto secured no permanent exemption from danger. Its victory demanded follow-through, and the alliance’s success at sea did not settle the wider struggle. A great victory is not diminished because future generations still have work to do. That is the condition of every inheritance worth preserving.
Europe is under siege today. That is this writer’s judgment about the combined pressure of violent extremism and the continent’s retreat from Christian conviction. The security threat has a documented reality. Europol’s 2025 report, covering 2024, identified jihadist terrorism as the European Union’s deadliest terrorist category that year. In September 2026, European counterterrorism officials were still warning about jihadist groups while confronting additional forms of violent extremism. Governments have an elementary obligation to protect their citizens, dismantle terrorist networks, and keep intimidation from dictating public life. A society that cannot guarantee people the freedom to worship, speak, and go about their lives without fear has failed at the first business of government.
But police cannot restore a faith that Christians have stopped practicing. In England and Wales, the share of people identifying as Christian fell from 59.3% in 2011 to 46.2% in 2021. Those reporting no religion rose from 25.2% to 37.2%. The census measures affiliation, not the contents of a person’s soul, but the direction is unmistakable. Christians must confront their own responsibilities within that decline. No foreign army makes a father stop teaching his children to pray. No terrorist organization deserves credit for every household that abandons Sunday worship. Blaming outsiders for every spiritual failure would let Christians escape the very examination of conscience their religion requires.
A cathedral can remain standing long after the people around it have ceased to understand why anyone built it. The stone survives. Visitors buy tickets. Someone explains the architecture. Whether the next generation encounters the living faith behind that building depends on believers willing to pass it on. That is where Christian renewal begins, and it is harder than posting a furious complaint about Europe’s decline. It requires parents, priests, teachers, and public officials who can speak with conviction and act with discipline. It also requires moral judgment clear enough to distinguish a peaceful Muslim neighbor from a jihadist who threatens him. The defense of Christian civilization carries obligations toward innocent people. Its defenders must be worthy of the name.
For Catholics here on Florida’s Gulf Coast, October 7 offers work close at hand. Attend Mass. Pray the Rosary with your family. Tell your children why the Church remembers Lepanto, and explain why the men who fought there sought the Blessed Mother’s help. Support Christians facing persecution and defend the freedom to practice the faith openly. The cameras will move on after today’s commemorations. The obligations will remain. Europe needs Our Lady of Victory more than ever, and Christians need the resolve to live the faith they ask her to protect. At Lepanto, men with bitter differences found a common purpose and acted upon it. Their example still stands before us, demanding an answer.
Our Lady of Victory, pray for us.
