Book Club
A reminder for all of you, who are PAID SUBSCRIBERS, that the next meeting of the Civil War Memory Book Club will take place on December 6 at 8pm EST. A number of you requested that we meet to discuss my new book, A Glorious Fate: The Life and Legacy of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw.
I am happy to comply and look forward to hearing your thoughts about the book.

Weekend at Ford’s Theatre
For those of you in the Washington, DC area, I will be in conversation with my good friend Alex Wood at Ford’s Theater on November 6 at 7pm. The following day I will be leading a tour of downtown DC that will focus on Union monuments. Our walk will culminate with an in-depth look at the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial at the National Gallery of Art. The tour begins at 9:30am. This is going to be a lot of fun. Hope to see some of you.
Recent Acquisition
I recently acquired a full set of MOLLUS, which stands for the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. The 60-volumes that comprise this set are organized by state and include addresses by Union veterans on a wide range of subjects concerning the Civil War.
I’ve got a number of ideas on how to use this resource. Stay tuned for a post about a Union POW whose views about Robert E. Lee might come as a surprise.

Historians Off the Cuff
My next conversation with fellow historian John Heckman will take place on Monday morning at 10am. We are going to explore the question of whether entertainment and good history are compatible. This promises to be an engaging and, dare I say, entertaining discussion.
A Bit of Good News
Yesterday I learned that I am the recipient of the 2027 Governor John Andrew Award, given annually by the Union Club of Boston. The organization was founded during the Civil War to support the Union war effort.
This award is given annually in recognition of “outstanding research and writing that has increased the public’s knowledge of the Civil War.” I am thrilled and honored to have been selected.
