A new poll found 55% of Americans support impeaching President Trump, including roughly 1 in 5 Republicans
Analyst G. Elliott Morris attributed Trump’s eroding conservative support to increasingly erratic behavior, with prominent right-wing figures publicly expressing regret over backing him
Connecticut Republicans have remained publicly loyal to Trump, with a state senator defending federal immigration forces even after they killed American citizens
Around 55% of adult Americans would support a House vote to impeach President Donald Trump, according to an April poll from Strength in Numbers / Verasight which found significant support for impeaching the president among Republicans.
The poll of more than 1,500 Americans was conducted between April 10 - April 14 and has a 2.6% margin of error. Its results suggest that a full 55% would support impeaching Trump while only 37% would oppose the effort.
The survey found Trump’s support among Republicans flagging. Around 21% of Republicans said they would support an impeachment effort by the U.S. House of Representatives. Strength in Numbers’ G. Elliott Morris speculated that Trump’s increasingly unhinged social media posts have helped to erode his support among conservatives.
“Tucker Carlson called the threats against Iran’s civilian infrastructure a war crime and now says he regrets helping elect Trump, while Alex Jones, Megyn Kelly, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Theo Von, and Tim Dillon have also spoken out,” Morris wrote.
However, if the president’s increasingly erratic behavior concerns Connecticut’s legislative Republicans, they’ve remained publicly loyal to Trump.
Just last week, Connecticut Senate Republicans sided with Trump and his ICE agents as they voted overwhelmingly against legislation that would give Connecticut residents a legal recourse if their rights are violated by federal forces.
“I will support the president and our federal immigration officials as long as they are sticking to prosecuting criminal aliens and removing them from our streets,” Sen. Rob Sampson, R-Wolcott, said of immigration forces even after they gunned down American citizens like Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good.
But while Connecticut Republicans line up behind their increasingly unpopular president, state Democrats have advanced policies to protect their constituents. Meanwhile, Connecticut’s U.S. Rep. John Larson has introduced articles of impeachment now supported by a majority of Americans, according to the Strength in Numbers poll.
“People across my district know he is unfit to lead and are calling for impeachment,” Larson said in a press release earlier this month.
