I suspect it will come as a relief to many people to read about some real royals, led by Prince William and Princess Anne, attending one of the largest gatherings of European royalty in years for the funeral of King Harald V of Norway in Oslo this afternoon.

William and Anne represented Britain well. William was there on behalf of the King, while Anne attended in a private capacity as godmother of the new king, Haakon VIII. It was an incredibly beautiful sight as the cortège passed through the streets on a fine, dry day. Some 46,000 people had filed past the coffin in the days before the funeral, a measure of how hugely loved and respected a monarch Harald was.

Polling throughout his reign put support for the monarchy in Norway at around 80 percent, and his personal approval was consistently higher than the institution's. Norwegians called him "folkekongen," the people's king. A 2016 garden-party speech saying Norwegians were "girls who love girls, boys who love boys, and girls and boys who love each other" went viral worldwide.
