In other words, a party that had less than half of the popular vote won all of the power to make policy decisions without any input or consideration from over 52% of society, all thanks to our antiquated and biased First Past the Post electoral system, which is known to create disproportionate representation and ultimately lead to political systems dominated by 2 major parties.
With proportionate representation, seats and thus power would be distributed proportionally based on how people voted, resulting in a minority government in which no single party holds a majority and is able to execute on their platform alone. In a system like this, people are required to WORK TOGETHER in order to pass policy, with different perspectives and values represented proportionally to that of society, which is a much more fair, equitable, and just way of creating policy that actually considers all the stakeholders.
A common outcome of this toxic electoral system is vote-splitting, which is a shallow, myopic, and even blatantly idiotic scapegoat for the shortcomings of a broken system than removes accountability from the people who promised change but deliberately failed to implement it out of their own self-interest, while placing blame on individuals for simply voting for what they believe in.
A true democracy is one that enables and embraces peoples wide varieties of perspectives and values, and encourages them to vote for what they believe in, for the world they want to live in, and anything that that discourages that in any way, is NOT a democracy.
It’s time we create systems of proportional representation to limit power and create more effective, equitable, and truly democratic systems capable of building better futures that consider everyones perspectives, instead of simply prioritizing the loudest few.
