I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but yesterday Nancy Mace, a sitting Republican congresswoman published a dangerous essay in the racist right-wing rag * Daily Wire*, declaring that liberal white women are a “national security threat” because they’ve been socialized to show too much “pathological empathy” to immigrants, trans people, and other groups in America who’ve been racialized as outsiders, predators, and invaders.
Though the target of her piece is the “African migrant,” she draws from an old trove of racial imagery harkening back to the Reconstruction and lynching eras in America, where Black men were depicted as sexually deviant beasts and brutes who had this unchecked urge to abuse white women and girls. She uses this old racial script and updates it for our authoritarian white supremacist political moment.
Listen, it ain’t surprising that this racist boolshit is coming out of Mace’s mouth. She’s a toxic, racist degenerate who has spent her political career peddling all kinds of racial, gender, anti-immigrant, and anti-trans rage bait that animate much of current politics under the Trump regime. By blowing this old racist dog whistle, Mace is calling on tens of millions of white women back into a racial role, to abandon empathy and morality, to chose a side, and uphold their duty to hold the color line.
In this audio piece I’m gonna walk you through why we need to read Nancy Mace’s latest piece as more than just ugly political theater. It is part of a dangerous revival that is putting lives at risk.
