Rather than a time-lapse video, I’m opting to show a cartoon in screen shots from beginning to end today. Cartoons usually start off with a very quick sketch. these generally take a minute or two. It’s just to convey a concept to editors.
Once I decided to move forward with the concept, I decided it would be more effective to have him sitting on a box of classified documents, completely oblivious to his own glaring double standard. I usually draw Trump from memory (he’s pretty damn easy to draw). But I use a photo sometimes if I want extra detail or if I’m drawing him from an angle I haven’t used in awhile.
Then I moved on to “inking” over the pencil. I do this on a separate layer so I can just hide the pencil layer later on.
Then I start adding color in layers.
There are actually three to four layers of color here already. For the suit, I start with a yellowish gold layer. Then the blue. Then a darker blue to add shadow and depth. Lastly, a layer of dark brown where I want to add more depth. The brown isn’t very visible, as I reduce the opacity in that layer so as not to overwhelm the blue. Then I collapse all those layers into one, because multiple layers makes the file size increase significantly. The layers of color add complexity, richness and depth.
The other elements don’t need as much color richness, so I only used two layers: mostly earth tones and blues for shadows. I want the eye to focus on Trump, so that’s where I add most of the color complexity.
Then I just need to duplicate the “classified” stamp that I created earlier (for the sketch) and place it all over the boxes.
Thank you all for subscribing. I couldn’t do it without you!
