If raw leafy greens have ever betrayed you the way they’ve betrayed me (I’m still holding that grudge!) seaweed can feel like an IBS veggie miracle.
Because seaweed is one of the only greens that doesn’t pick a fight with your gut.
It’s naturally low in insoluble fiber (the roughage kind that causes IBS trouble) but packed with soft, soothing soluble fiber (the kind an IBS gut depends on for normal motility.)
I think of seaweed as my veggie greens friend, versus those jerks raw lettuce and kale.
Seaweed also offers extra digestive perks: magnesium to relax intestinal muscles, iodine to support your thyroid and digestion, plus trace minerals and antioxidants that treat your whole body kindly.
Try any of the common types of seaweed - nori, wakame, kombu, kelp, dulse, hijiki, Irish moss.
They will all come in dried form in little packets, at Asian markets or the Asian section of grocery stores. Rehydrate in cold water for a few minutes and they’re ready to use. And just one or two tablespoons dry makes a pretty good serving size per person once rehydrated.
Keep seaweed portions small-ish, and pair with your usual soluble fiber foundation safe foods: rice, noodles, potatoes, sweet potatoes.
Easy ideas:
Cut nori sheets into slivers to top cooked rice or noodles.
Try toasted nori seaweed snacks, lots of flavor options!
Add wakame to miso or udon noodle soups.
Flavor broths with kombu for delicious savory notes.
Make a simple sunomono salad with wakame, rice vinegar, a little sugar, a little soy sauce, a little sliced cucumber.
Toss a handful of hijiki into stir fries and fried rice.
Tip Takeaway: Seaweed is one of the few greens that is truly IBS-friendly. If raw salad greens are your sworn enemy, seaweed might just be your new veggie best friend.
