Trump’s Ban of CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House News Coverage Overturned
In a Truth Social post last Friday, Trump declared, “Effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MS NOW... and Politico...from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ fake news!” Trump wrote, “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report fiction and lies when they’re covering the President of the United States.” Then, on Saturday, according to CNN, reporters for the three outlets “tried to enter the White House grounds to cover news and were denied entry by the Secret Service, which seized their press passes.” Per The New Republic, in solidarity with the three news outlets, other broadcasters, “including NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox News—had joined together to suspend coverage of the president and his actions until he reversed course.” It backfired immediately when, after the pool camera and microphone were pulled from White House coverage, Trump was completely inaudible during a South Lawn ribbon-cutting event.
The following Monday, the three outlets sued the White House, saying the ban “could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment nor a more blatant violation of our most fundamental constitutional principles.” Early Thursday morning, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, sided with the news outlets.
