MAGA can’t even ruthlessly execute people competently.
For the second time this year, Tennessee botched the execution of a death row inmate. Christa Pike is currently in critical condition, receiving life-saving care, after the state tried and failed to kill her via lethal injection. Following the embarrassing and cruel failure, Governor Bill Lee has halted all remaining executions pending a third-party review.
However, some Republicans won’t be deterred in their pro-death march. Disgraced legal scholar John Yoo, you know, the same dude who rationalized the use of torture during the failed War on Terror, appeared on Fox earlier today and recommended America bring back the firing squad. These are the same people who allegedly believe in Jesus and are “pro-life,” until the babies, of course, come out of the womb and have to pull themselves up from their OshKosh B’Gosh straps.
So many Americans, especially in red states, will continue to vote for these “Christian” Republicans even as they advance policies that quite literally kill them. Jonathan Metzl, a Tennessean, even wrote a book about it called Dying of Whiteness. There are some, such as Justin Kanew, who believe that the pain, death, and economic suffering might finally awaken his fellow Tennessee community members to MAGA’s ongoing corruption and grift. With the Tennessee Holler, he has emerged as a strident political voice championing progressive policies and an end to Israel’s genocide.
He joins me to explain why Tennessee remains committed to a pro-death cult and what, if anything, can be done to save them from themselves.
