I will admit that I was unaware that former South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy had his own Sunday evening show on Fox News. (Unaware but not surprised!)
But I was perusing President Donald Trump’s Truth Social feed on Sunday — don’t ask — and came across this notice:
So, I fired up the TV and tuned in. It was, unsurprisingly, a real shit show.
Trump knows he is is facing the prospect of a bad-to-very-bad midterm election in 64 days. He feels cornered. And when he feels cornered, his worst tendencies and instincts come to the fore. Witness his recent ad hominem attacks on two prominent female reporters: Maggie Haberman and Kristen Welker.
I went through the full transcript of Trump’s interview with the sycophantic Gowdy. And I picked out the quotes from the president you need to see. They’re below.

“I had a wonderful life. But, you know, I had a little expression that you may have heard before, ‘Make America Great Again’.”
Gowdy’s first “question” that elicited this response from Trump? “If you had to do it all over again, would you come down the escalator, because you had a great life before you did?” Gag me with a spoon. And away we go!
“Make America Great Again. It was the first thing I thought of, and I used it as a phrase, and MAGA certainly caught on, as you know very well.”
“I used it as a phrase.”
“I'm a perfectionist, and if I see a crooked line, if I see a corner that's not square, if I see something going on that isn't good, if I see dirt, that's one of the things I hate about the radical left. Everything turns filthy, dirty, and then it goes to hell. And then the murders start and the crime starts and everything else”
This answer is a journey. The “question” was about why Trump works so hard. Man, Gowdy really is holding the president’s feet to the fire!
“I don't know if that's natural. I don't know if it's picked up. My parents were very clean people.”
“Maybe more important, Washington, D.C. was almost the crime capital of the United States and now, it's -- it's a totally safe place”
This is simply false. New Orleans had the most murders per capita in 2025. Memphis had the most overall crime. I am not suggesting DC was a perfectly safe place. It was not. It is safer today than it was a year ago because of the National Guard surge. But it is also not a “totally safe place” today.
