FBI Director Kash Patel defended the bureau’s revised hiring standards before the Senate Judiciary Committee, after reports that the FBI had eased three automatic disqualifiers in June: stealing from an employer, paying for sex, and bestiality.
Patel argued the change was narrow, meant to protect applicants coerced or abused as minors, not to excuse criminal conduct. Senators from both parties pressed him on it, and the FBI later said clearly criminal acts remain disqualifying.
**The pushback:**A former agent warned the behavior can signal deeper problems and shouldn’t be dropped as a screen. Senate Democrats linked the move to the FBI’s shrinking workforce after mass departures. Patel also declined to answer questions about personal use of an FBI jet.
The European Union has floated offering Canada a first-of-its-kind ‘associate member’ status, a move Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled in her State of the Union address.
The pitch could give Canadians visa-free work rights across the 27-nation bloc and deeper cooperation on defense, AI, and critical minerals. It reflects cooling U.S.-Canada ties after trade tensions and tariffs led Ottawa to seek new partners.
**The calculation:**Nearly 70% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S. and much of it is now exposed to U.S. tariffs, so shifting more trade toward Europe would reduce that dependence. Canada wants the benefits without surrendering the sovereignty full membership requires. Any deal would take years, but the signal alone marks a major geopolitical shift.

Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on the House floor, citing the Iran war and other actions.
Massie, a frequent Trump critic who lost his primary and leaves office within months, said Hegseth’s conduct is illegal and cannot be ignored. The rebuke is unusual coming from a fellow Republican.
**The odds:**The impeachment is unlikely to advance in a GOP-controlled Congress, but it forces lawmakers on record over Hegseth and the war. Other Republicans, including Senator Thom Tillis, have criticized his Pentagon management. The White House, via Attorney General Todd Blanche, said Hegseth is doing well and follows the law.
