Cornell University faces renewed scrutiny after Jane Doe, a former student, sued the school on September 16, alleging seven Chi Phi fraternity members drugged her with ketamine and assaulted her at their house in October 2024. Only two were expelled; others got suspensions and had to write an essay.
The lawsuit, including group-chat screenshots, prompted Tompkins County prosecutors to reopen their probe two years after Doe first reported the case. Prosecutors say her civil complaint differs from her police report; Doe’s attorney disputes that.
**The pushback:**Defendants Scott Kretzschmar and Scott Norris deny wrongdoing. Cornell says it closed the fraternity in 2024. AOC and Florence Pugh have criticized the university’s response.

British police arrested five men Sunday near RAF Fairford, a base the US has used to strike Iran. A farmer noticed three vans with odd signage and masked men, and called police after they fled. Armed officers and a helicopter responded; 85 Whelford households were evacuated.
The five, all British nationals in their 20s, face suspicion under the Explosives and Terrorism Acts. Investigators are examining whether US B-1 bombers at the base were the target, reviving debate over hosting American strikes on Iran.
**The context:**The men were released on bail under strict conditions. The US Embassy urged Americans to stay alert.

Today’s Poll:Fairford FalloutThe plot under investigation near RAF Fairford has reignited debate over the UK’s decision to let the US launch strikes on Iran from British soil. Critics argue the arrangement puts nearby communities at risk. Supporters, including UK officials, say the security response worked and that ending the arrangement would strain the US-UK alliance.
What should the UK do about hosting US strikes on Iran from British soil?
The US and China each cut about $30 billion in tariffs this week, easing months of trade tension. The US dropped tariffs on 77 categories, including toys and appliances, while China cut tariffs on 1,619 items, including personal care goods and medical devices.
The cuts stem from the countries’ new Board of Trade, giving China access to US exports and easing costs for US shoppers. Analysts note the total is small next to last year’s $415 billion in trade, and that soybeans and tech minerals were left out.
**What’s next:**Trump and Xi agreed to extend their trade truce two months. Analysts say the soybean omission gives China leverage ahead of the midterms. A US-Taiwan arms sale remains unresolved.
