France partially or fully closed 400 to 500 schools on Monday as student protests over education quality continued. Education Minister Édouard Geffray said the closures were due to unmet security conditions.
The movement began a few weeks ago near Paris over staffing shortages and has spread nationwide. Students cite classes of 30 to 40, crumbling buildings, and university admissions they say favor privileged kids.
**The fallout:**More than 5,000 people, mostly minors, have been arrested, and officials report 190 students and 78 staff injured. Geffray says far-left activists hijacked the movement. The left-wing party France Unbowed denies organizing it, though leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a likely 2027 candidate, has said he hopes young people remember his party's support.
