Republicans are sorting through Tuesday’s midterm losses, which cost them control of both the House and Senate. President Trump has blamed the candidates and said a big problem was that he wasn’t on the ballot.
Many Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, point to the Iran war and the cost of living. More than 20 U.S. service members have died during operations related to the war, including from noncombat causes. Pentagon estimates put U.S. costs above $47 billion, while gas prices have risen about 40% since the war began.
**What’s next:**Trump says he accepts the results and will work with Democrats, though he has also said he’ll veto their bills. Some allies are urging White House staff changes and a new approach on Iran and tariffs.
Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña submitted his resignation after the collapse of Ueno Bank, a fintech app used by about half the country. The central bank took control of Ueno after its solvency ratio fell below half the legal minimum, leaving roughly 3 million customers unable to access their accounts.
Peña once held shares in the bank’s parent company, and the central bank chief he appointed is a former Ueno executive. Opposition lawmakers alleged conflicts of interest and cover-ups involving over $800 million in public funds.
**What’s next:**Peña submitted his resignation by video, but the lower house voted to impeach him anyway. His resignation still requires Senate approval, and impeachment proceedings could delay Vice President Pedro Alliana’s swearing-in.

A London jury found comedian Russell Brand guilty Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of two other rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault, and he’ll stay in custody until his sentencing Monday.
The convictions involve four women and incidents from 2004 to 2009. The women came forward after a documentary aired allegations against Brand. His lawyer argued the program influenced them, and Brand testified the encounters were consensual.
**The stakes:**Rape carries a maximum of life in prison in the U.K., though the New York Times reported 4 to 19 years is more typical. Each sexual assault count carries up to 10 years.
And after a nail-biter of a week, let’s dive into some good news:
