The IPL coaching landscape is experiencing a major transformation ahead of its next season. Several franchises have appointed former players to overhaul or strengthen their coaching staff.
These appointments raise broader questions about how playing experience translates to coaching in a league that has evolved considerably since its inception in 2008.
Delhi Capitals
The Capitals have completely changed their coaching unit. Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as their new head coach. Ganguly played 59 IPL matches and scored 1,349 runs in them at a strike rate of 106.81. His best season was 2010 - 493 runs at a strike rate of 117.66. These figures look modest compared to those of modern batters. But Ganguly belonged to a generation that was still adjusting to this new, shortened version of the game.
This appointment is not about how prolific the former Indian skipper was as a player in the IPL; it is more about his cricketing understanding and recent involvement in management. Ganguly played a key role in guiding Pretoria Capitals to the 2026 SA20 final; besides, he has previously served Delhi in advisory and management roles.
Yuvraj Singh is regarded by many as one of the finest limited-overs batters India has ever produced. However, his IPL returns seldom justified his reputation. In 132 matches, Yuvraj scored 2,750 runs at a strike rate of 129.72.
His performances fluctuated considerably in the league. While he scored 376 runs for RCB in 2014 at a strike rate of 135.25, he managed to accumulate only 248 for Delhi Daredevils in 2015 at a strike rate of 118.10. A disappointing return, especially given his price of Rs 16 crore.
Yuvraj’s T20 pedigree was apparent in his exploits during the 2007 T20 World Cup. The appointment also recognises the mentoring role he has recently played in grooming young Indian batters such as Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill.
While Ganguly and Yuvraj’s IPL records look modest compared to their international reputations, Amit Mishra’s numbers in the league speak to his dexterity as a spinner. Mishra is the only bowler in the tournament’s history to have three hat-tricks. In his IPL career, Mishra picked up 174 wickets in 162 appearances at an economy of 7.38.
The fast-bowling coach, Chaminda Vaas, was more famous for his exploits in international cricket. He holds the unique distinction of taking a hat-trick with the first three deliveries of an ODI. Vaas also holds the record for the best bowling figures in the 50-over format. The Sri Lankan legend played 13 IPL matches and took 18 wickets.
Chennai Super Kings
After Stephen Fleming parted ways with CSK, they appointed Zaheer Khan as their head coach. While his international achievements need no introduction, Zaheer played 100 IPL matches across three franchises. In these matches, he picked up 102 wickets at an economy of 7.59.
CSK’s new bowling coach comes with an even better IPL CV. Mohit Sharma took 134 wickets in 120 IPL matches. But even more revealing is that he won the Purple Cap in 2014 and came agonisingly close to repeating the feat nine years later. Sharma was playing for CSK when he topped the bowling charts with 23 wickets in 2014. He finished second in 2023 with 27 wickets for GT, just one behind Mohammed Shami.
Zaheer has experience in cricket management, having worked with the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants. However, his job will be particularly challenging, as he takes over a team in transition. But when it comes to coaching credentials, CSK’s new assistant coach, Gareth Batty, presents the perfect example. Batty has no IPL playing experience, but he recently guided Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024.
Mumbai Indians
The five-time champions have paid a fitting tribute to one of their biggest legends, Mahela Jayawardene. Kieron Pollard enters a new phase in his IPL journey as he steps in as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians.
Pollard played 189 IPL matches and scored 3,412 runs at a strike rate of 147.32. He also claimed 69 wickets in those appearances. What these numbers don’t reveal are the crucial knocks he played for Mumbai in countless pressure situations and big games. His 2020 season was particularly destructive, as he scored at a strike rate of 191.43.
Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR’s appointment of Ryan ten Doeschate as head of cricket strategy across the Knight Riders organisation represents a different kind of investment. Ten Doeschate played only 29 IPL matches and scored 326 runs. But KKR have prioritised familiarity and persistence in their championship culture. The Dutch cricketer was part of the setup as a player when they won the title in 2012 and 2014. He was also part of the coaching unit when they ended their 10-year title drought in 2024.
This is not simply about former IPL superstars returning to the league. The emerging picture reflects the different paths franchises are looking to take. While some are banking on playing experience and reputation, others are placing their bets on specialised expertise and proven coaching success.
