We have good news to share: we are releasing our most recent research on frontier inference in a comprehensive new technical book, The Frontier of LLM Inference: The Engineering Blueprint for KV Cache Optimization, Low-Precision Kernels, and Cluster Sizing. This 481-page book is co-authored by myself and Manish Bhatt (Application Security Tech Lead for AI & Crypto at Amazon Leo).

Inference optimization is no longer a downstream operational concern; it has become the foundational determinant of whether agentic AI systems succeed or fail in production. Unlike legacy single-turn chatbots that execute one isolated completion, an agentic system executes recursive loops: decomposing user goals, dispatching tool calls, waiting for environment execution, ingesting multi-kilobyte observation outputs, running verification steps, and re-planning.
This operational shift introduces three hard engineering challenges:
**Compound Turn Latency:**An autonomous workflow frequently requires 20 to 50 sequential reasoning steps across orchestrators and subagents. When single-token latency (TPOT) is 25 milliseconds and time-to-first-token (TTFT) is 800 milliseconds, a 30-turn workflow with 4,000 generated tokens incurs over 100 seconds of pure model latency. Add external tool wait states, and task completion latency easily exceeds human interactive thresholds, stalling autonomous software factories.**Context Compounding and Memory Exhaustion:**Each tool interaction appends observation logs, code diffs, and environment outputs directly to the prompt context. Sequence lengths routinely scale from 4K tokens up to 128K or 1M tokens. Under standard Multi-Head Attention, dynamic key-value (KV) cache memory scales linearly with sequence length, quickly consuming dozens of gigabytes per concurrent session and exhausting GPU high-bandwidth memory (HBM).**Redundant Prefill Waste in Tool-Wait Loops:**When an agent halts execution to wait for an external database query or API response, conventional monolithic serving engines evict the session's KV cache to service other traffic. When the tool returns, the engine must re-process the entire multi-turn prefix from scratch, wasting compute cycles and multiplying operational costs.
We wrote The Frontier of LLM Inference because existing industry literature focuses almost entirely on pre-training parameters, dataset curation, and alignment algorithms, leaving a critical knowledge void in how foundation models actually execute on silicon. Infrastructure teams and systems engineers are tasked with deploying models under strict service-level objectives (SLOs), tight power envelopes, and soaring compute costs without a unified, mathematically grounded engineering reference.
This book provides that blueprint. We synthesize first-principles accelerator physics, low-precision numeric formats, custom GPU kernel engineering, and cluster-scale disaggregated topologies to give systems architects, ML engineers, and infrastructure directors the exact formulas, architectures, and implementation patterns required to scale production inference engines.
This release covers the complete engineering foundations and production blueprints across the following core architectural roadmap:
**The Arithmetic Intensity Collapse and Silicon Rooflines:**Profiling why memory bandwidth limits H100 and B200 token generation to 1 to 2 FLOP/byte while tensor cores idle at sub-2% utilization.**Multi-Head Latent Attention (MLA) and KV Cache Compression:**Quantifying how low-rank key-value projection eliminates 93.3% of attention state footprint during long-sequence agentic generation.**Next-Generation Speculative Decoding Engines:**Evaluating Multi-Token Prediction and dynamic draft trees to achieve 2.4× acceleration over autoregressive baselines.**Blackwell FP4 Microscaling and Sub-4-Bit Precision:**Analyzing block-scaled FP4 numeric formats and native FP8 GEMM kernels without perplexity degradation.**Disaggregated Prefill-Decode Topologies and RDMA Transport:**Sizing 4-tier memory hierarchies, Mooncake transport, and queue decoupling to eliminate interference between TTFT and TPOT.**Agentic Tool Loops and Session SLO Economics:**Measuring KV retention across multi-turn subagent execution and pricing token caches against flat completion models.**Paid Subscriber Full Book Access:**Downloading the complete 481-page production PDF covering all 12 chapters, 187 architectural diagrams, and 240 worked engineering solutions.
