Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves.— Romans 1:24
Three times in one chapter Paul writes the same verdict. “God gave them up” (Romans 1:24, 26, 28). The verb is paredōken (παρέδωκεν), to hand over, to deliver up. It is the word used for prisoners transferred into custody. Read quickly, it sounds like God losing patience, closing the file, walking out of the room.
But look at what Paul puts in front of it. Before God hands anyone over, something has already been handed over. They “exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images” (Romans 1:23). They “exchanged the truth about God for a lie” (Romans 1:25). The trade happened first. God gives them up to what they have already chosen for themselves. He is nowhere shown making anyone evil. He stops blocking the road. That is harder to live with, honestly, than the alternative. A God who forces us back would be easier to explain.
Many interpreters read the verb this way: God releases the restraining hand. Not a judge slamming a gavel so much as a parent’s grip opening.
Any parent of an adult child knows this hand. There comes a day when holding on by force stops being love and becomes something else, and the hand opens even though every instinct says to tighten it. Not because caring ended. Because holding on by force was never going to produce the one thing love actually wants: someone who stays by choice.
Scripture refuses to let us imagine this as cold. Centuries before Paul, through Hosea, God spoke over Israel in almost the same language.
How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender.— Hosea 11:8
That is the same God. The same verb. And a heart in open anguish over the handing over. So when we set Romans 1:24 beside Hosea 11, the wrath of God stops sounding like the opposite of His love. It remains holy and just judgment on sin. It is also love, still fully love, meeting a refusal it will not overpower.
Here is what gives this passage its weight. Nobody in Romans 1 experiences the giving up as punishment. They experience it as freedom. The restraints are gone. The resistance has stopped. Life finally feels unobstructed.
That is the horror of it. Paul is describing people who have never felt better, and he is calling it judgment.
It is worth slowing down here, because the stretches of life we would describe as spiritually quiet, when conviction goes soft and nothing seems to be pressing against us, we tend to file under peace. Some of them were.
And Paul does not let anyone off the hook. He lists the deeds and says plainly they “deserve to die” (Romans 1:32). Being given up does not erase responsibility. It confirms a direction we were already walking.
But wait. That is the end of the chapter, and it is nowhere near the end of the letter.
Paul is not building a case to crush us. He is doing what a good doctor does when the scan comes back and she will not round the numbers down. Telling us we are fine would be the cruelty. She says the word out loud, and she says it early, because early is the only reason there is anything to say. Paul wants us to see, while there is still time to see it, that sin has an end and the end is death, and that no amount of law-keeping will get us out from under it. “By works of the law no human being will be justified in His sight” (Romans 3:20). That verse is the floor of the argument. Two and a half chapters of diagnosis, and the diagnosis closes with every mouth shut.
Then, one verse later, the music changes. “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law” (Romans 3:21). Everything dark in chapter 1 exists so that but now can land with its full weight. Paul had to take us all the way down to the giving up before he could show us Who came down after us.
Which turns the whole thing around on us, gently.
If the giving up comes as a hand opening, then every time we have felt God’s grip, every conviction that would not leave us alone, every road we were determined to take that somehow stayed blocked, was that hand still closed. We have spent years calling that interference.
So the question Romans 1 leaves us with is not whether God feels near this week. It is whether anything in us is still being resisted. Because resistance is not distance. It is the opposite.
And if the answer is nothing, if everything has gone quiet and smooth and unopposed, Paul has already told us where the road goes. He has also told us that it is 3:21 and not 1:32 that gets the last word.
The grip we resent may be the only reason we are still inside His love.
