Thanks to everyone who attended last night’s meeting of the Civil War Memory book club. We had an engaging and entertaining discussion about Reconstruction. Rather than talk about just one book, we gathered to talk about five recent studies. It was an experiment, but I think it worked out really well.
The book club has become my favorite offshoot of the newsletter. I get to spend an hour with some incredibly passionate and smart fellow students of history. It really is a pleasure.
There are many reasons to upgrade to a paid subscription here, but this is at the top of the list.
It was suggested that for our next meeting we read and discuss my new book, * A Glorious Fate: The Life and Legacy of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw*. It’s an obvious choice, though I don’t want to be presumptuous. Many of you are now reading it and I am genuinely curious as to what you think of the book.
Unless I hear strong objections to this, I am scheduling our next meeting for Sunday, December 13 at our regular time of 8:00PM EST. While I hope that you have some positive things to say about the book, I welcome your criticisms as well.
This should be fun.
