Over the past fourteen weeks, we have undertaken a journey unlike any other, the inward-facing path, which has revealed the presence, the primacy and the very nature of awareness. This week we pause to take in the implications of this discovery, before embarking next week on the outward-facing path.
You are aware.
This simple fact – so obvious it is almost always overlooked – has been the thread running through everything we have explored thus far. Whatever else may be uncertain, this cannot legitimately be doubted: something is aware of these words, aware of the room around you, aware of the thoughts and feelings that arise and pass. This awareness is not something you have; it is what you are.
We began these explorations with the so-called hard problem of consciousness, the puzzle of how subjective experience could arise from objective matter. The question cannot be answered, not because we do not yet know how consciousness arises from matter and will one day discover it, but because it begins from a false assumption: that matter is primary and awareness somehow emerges from it. But what if the relationship is the other way around? What if awareness is not a product of the body, but the reality in which the body appears?
