All day long, your attention moves from one thing to the next: a conversation, a task, a worry, a plan, as you are continually drawn into the content of your experience. Throughout all of it, however, there is something that stays exactly as it is. It is the simple fact of being or being aware, which you refer to every time you say ‘I’.
If awareness were able to give itself a name, it would call itself ‘I’, because ‘I’ is the name that whatever knows itself gives to itself. Only awareness is aware, and therefore only awareness can know or be aware of itself, or indeed any other thing. And therefore the name ‘I’ refers specifically to awareness’s knowledge of itself.
