California’s high speed rail project has become the poster child for government waste and incompetence. The average person marvels at how anyone can burn through billions of tax dollars and not lay a single mile of railroad track. Well, this might help answer that…
A report by the High-Speed Rail Authority’s Inspector General found that over the past two years, consultants had billed the project for more than $1 million in travel reimbursements, out of which $680,500 didn’t comply with the state requirement for advance approval and “there was little to no upfront consideration of the need for or cost of the travel.”
Consequently, $592,000 worth of the travel expenses were found to be unallowable, including first class airfare and premium Uber rides for trips to gyms, tiki bars, escape rooms, cigar lounges and private homes for no business purpose. Republican Assembly Leader Alexandra Mecedo said, “Only in California could a project that is years late and billions over budget somehow find money for consultant rides to a cigar lounge.”
