Angela Gonzales-Torres is a 31-year-old community organizer taking on Jimmy Gomez, a 5-term Democratic establishment candidate heavily funded by AIPAC and AI money.
The lifelong Angelino and daughter of a deported veteran shouldn’t have a chance in hell, considering she isn’t taking any corporate PAC money and lacks name recognition. She’s also a Democratic Socialist, proudly running a progressive campaign advocating for a tax on billionaires, abolishing ICE, and ending aid to Israel. However, the latest polls have her ahead of Gomez, who is facing a House ethics probe over sexual misconduct allegations.
Meanwhile, AIPAC finally realized its brand name has become political kryptonite and announced it will stop endorsing candidates and making PAC contributions. That being said, they’re laundering their money and agenda through anodine-sounding names, such as the United Democracy Project and Elect Chicago Women.
Unfortunately, Democratic leadership remains disconnected from their base and a growing majority of Americans who don’t want their money supporting an ongoing genocide and apartheid in Palestine. They still refuse to champion abolishing ICE, expanding the Supreme Court, or stepping away from corporate money. They believe they can continue with business as usual after they (most likely) win back Congress after the midterm election. It would benefit them to actually travel across the country and listen to voters who are clearly sick and tired of corrupt institutions and establishment politicians unwilling and unable to fight for a bold economic populist agenda.
Thankfully, Torres and other incoming Democrats have their finger on the pulse and realize the status quo needs a radical makeover, so people can finally afford to live in the most powerful country on Earth.
