In the early 1800s, Europe was going through a big shift. Countries were modernizing, writing new laws, and deciding who got full rights as a citizen. And somewhere in the middle of all that progress, someone gave a name to what they considered to be a problem. They landed on “the Jewish Question.”
On the surface, it sounded like a policy debate. Should Jewish people be allowed to vote? To own property? To hold government jobs? But here’s the funny thing…nobody was asking “the Christian Question” or “the Protestant Question.” The very fact that Jewish existence was framed as something that needed to be figured out tells you everything about how Jewish people were being seen. Not as citizens waiting for their rights. As a problem waiting for a solution.
Even people who thought they were being fair got it wrong. Karl Marx, who was born into a Jewish family and was ethnically a Jew wrote an essay in 1844 arguing that Jewish people needed to give up their religion and cultural identity to be fully accepted as human beings. What he was really saying was that Jewishness was the problem, and shedding it was the price of belonging. Jewish people weren’t invited to answer the question. Everyone else just got to ask it about them behind their backs.
By the late 1800s, the polite debate version of the Jewish Question was gone. A new, uglier version had taken its place. This one wasn’t about citizenship. It was about race. Jewish people weren’t just described as religiously different. They were described as biologically dangerous. German nationalists wrote bestselling books about it. Newspapers ran columns about it. Respected professors taught it.
A Jewish journalist named Theodor Herzl was covering a trial in Paris in 1894 when a French army officer named Alfred Dreyfus was falsely convicted of treason because he was Jewish. Herzl watched the crowds outside the courthouse screaming for Jewish blood, and he came to a conclusion that changed history. He realized Europe was never going to answer the Jewish Question in favor of the Jews. His response was to create Zionism, the movement for a Jewish homeland, because he believed that Jewish people would only be safe when they had a country of their own.
Then came the Nazis. They didn’t hide what they were doing. The official name for the Holocaust in Nazi government documents was “The Final Solution to the Jewish Question.” Six million people were the answer.
Henry Ford, one of the most famous and admired men in America, spent seven years publishing a newspaper series called “The International Jew” out of his Dearborn, Michigan headquarters. Starting in 1920, his paper ran 91 articles arguing that Jewish people were secretly controlling American banking, media, and politics. Ford also paid to print and distribute hundreds of thousands of copies of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion across the United States. The Protocols was a proven fake, a forged document invented in Russia to stir up hatred, but Ford gave it new life and enormous reach. Adolf Hitler was such a fan of Ford’s work that he kept Ford’s portrait on the wall of his office in Munich and praised him by name in Mein Kampf.
Charles Lindbergh, the celebrated aviator and American hero, gave a speech in Des Moines, Iowa in 1941 that made things even clearer. He named three groups he said were dragging America into World War II…the Roosevelt administration, the British government, and Jewish people. He talked about Jewish media ownership, Jewish organizations, and Jewish self-interest as threats to American neutrality. He called it honest talk. The America First movement he represented became a home for antisemitic organizing that lasted long after Lindbergh’s public reputation collapsed.
Ford and Lindbergh didn’t import the Jewish Question from Europe. They grew it right here, using American celebrity, American money, and American audiences. That tradition didn’t end with their generation.
