Can Taking Digestive Enzymes Help IBS?
Sometimes! But getting the right combination can be important.
Enzymes won’t cure IBS, but their targeted use can make specific foods or meals easier to tolerate.
So key your digestive enzymes to your individual food triggers with this handy-dandy chart:
**Some important things to keep in mind: **
Digestive enzymes are
most likely to help bloating, gas, and post‑meal discomfortfrom food triggers. They won’t help much with stress‑driven flares, motility regulation of diarrhea and/or constipation, or pain from visceral hypersensitivity.
Take enzymes
right beforethe first bite of your food.Introduce
one enzyme at a timeto judge the results.**Enzymes won’t help with all dairy triggers.**Lactase is the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk. But this is most useful if you have lactose intolerance, not IBS. Lactase will NOT help with IBS intolerances due to the high fat dairy content or dairy proteins such as casein and whey.
