As the war in the Middle East expands, consider some of the domestic headlines:
CANCELLATIONS- United Airlines announced it plans tocancelsome of its less profitable routes through the end of the year as the cost of jet fuel continues to soar.SHORTAGES- Diesel shortages appear to be impacting some parts ofTexas, with some stations in the northern part of the state displaying an "out of diesel" notice.GAS- The national average for regular unleaded gasjumpedby 7 cents in 24 hours, with the price of diesel doing the same. Note the year-over-year difference below.UNCERTAIN: JPMorgan’s commodities team released a𝕏statementsaying, “For the first time since the start of the Iran conflict, we don’t have a baseline view. We simply don’t know how to model the endgame.”
GOP Rep. Maria Salazar is running for reelection in a South Florida district that Donald Trump won by +15 points in 2024. This is her ad:
“A new Marquette Law School Poll national survey finds 54% of likely voters saying they will vote for a Democratin congressional elections in November, while 41% say they will vote for a Republican. In Georgia, Republican strategists are privately discussing whether the Senate race has drifted beyond the party’s reach.
In Kansas, Vice President JD Vance campaigned for a Senate Republican, even though a Democrat there has not been elected to the chamber since 1932.
In Nebraska, a new Republican super PAC just sprang up to spend to defend a billionaire incumbent.
And across the country, President Trump’s political operation is suddenly investing in what once appeared to be bright-red Senate races and House districts, including several in Texas that his party claimed to have safely gerrymandered only a year ago.
Less than seven weeks before the midterm elections, the political environment has deteriorated so badly for Republicans that the battlefield now extends deep into states and districts Mr. Trump carried three times, often by double digits.

My take from yesterday:
OpenAI has disclosed a batch of “concerning behaviour” by its AI models and set out a new framework to track and report such incidents, as the industry battles deepening fears over the safety of the technology.
The company revealed that its flagship model, known as GPT-5.6 Sol, as well as other models, yet to be released, had engaged in “unexpected or concerning” behaviour over the past six months.
The six incidents included models developing ways to ignore “normal constraints”, fabricating and misrepresenting data and hiding mistakes made while conducting tasks, the San Francisco-based company said on Wednesday.

Left-wing Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s imam scrubbed videos of his sermons from YouTube, including one in which he gave an “absentee funeral prayer” hailing the late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh as a “heroic martyr” and another in which he urged his congregants to vote for El-Sayed.
The Muslim Community Association (MCA) of Ann Arbor’s YouTube channel featured dozens of recordings of Imam Abdelhamid Algizawi’s sermons as recently as Tuesday but now shows only the message, “This channel doesn’t have any content.” A video of Algizawi’s Aug. 2, 2024, sermon eulogizing Haniyeh, which was also accessible on Tuesday, is now “unavailable” and set to “private.” So is a sermon Algizawi delivered in the wake of El-Sayed’s primary victory, which the imam described as a “very big victory for Muslims” and “for the Islamic nation.”
