Consumer prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.4% in August, leaving inflation 3.4% higher than a year ago. That monthly jump was significantly hotter than July’s 0.1% increase.
Why this matters: Inflation is once again outrunning Americans’ paychecks. Average hourly earnings have risen just 3.1% over the past year, the weakest wage growth in five years, meaning workers’ purchasing power is slipping as prices continue climbing.
This is becoming more than just an energy story. As Heather Long notes on 𝕏X, higher gasoline prices were a major driver of August’s increase, but prices also rose meaningfully across shelter, dining, transportation, and vehicles, further evidence that inflation is becoming more widespread throughout the economy.
The bottom line: The result of the CPI report is that next week’s Federal Reserve meeting looks all but certain to lock in a quarter-point rate hike.
