A catastrophic flash flood tore through northern Nepal Wednesday, killing hundreds and leaving more than 1,000 people missing across Nepal and neighboring Tibet. Nepalese police said Thursday that 359 people had been killed, with bodies recovered more than 60 miles downstream as rescue crews searched isolated communities by helicopter.
How it started: The disaster appears to have started high in the Himalayas, where a massive glacier collapse sent ice, rock and sediment plunging more than 4,000 feet into the valley below. The force of the plunge sent a wave of debris racing down the mountains at an estimated 110 miles per hour, sending a wall of mud and water through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.
At one monitoring point, the river reportedly rose nearly 30 feet in just 30 minutes. An event initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake was later determined by the U.S. Geological Survey to be seismic energy generated by the glacier collapse itself.
Context: The scale of the disaster is still not quite clear. Hundreds of foreign tourists and pilgrims, including at least 60 Americans, remain unaccounted for, while rescue crews face washed-out roads, deep mud, and the threat of additional flooding. Authorities are now warning that the original disaster created a new lake behind debris blocking the Bhotekoshi River, raising fears that it could breach and send another surge downstream.
